Many services are available at our district and school for both children and parents. We encourage you to contact the elementary school for more information on programs that your child may be involved with or to discuss programs that may seem appropriate for your child or family.

Children are often empowered by participation in groups. While different groups can exist for various reasons, social skills/friendship group and the divorce group (Changing Families) are two that fill the most consistently. Groups are developed based on student needs and are run throughout the school year.

The classroom guidance program is coordinated and taught by the school counselor. The counselor provides lessons bimonthly in the classrooms to promote the development of self-esteem, self-awareness, social skills, and career development.

Help is available on an individual basis for children and parents. This is not designed to be clinical therapy, rather may take the form of social skill-building, emotional support, referral to outside agencies, etc.

Students are offered positive self-protection skills through classroom lessons which seek to appropriately raise a child's awareness of abuse and to strengthen self concept, refusal, and reporting skills.

With the safety of the child in mind, Blaine Elementary School follows these practices:
1. Children will be released only to the parent/ guardian or designee. If special circumstances exist, such as specific custody arrangements, protection orders etc., the appropriate paperwork must be provided to the school.
2. Suspected child abuse or neglect must be reported. We are required by the law to report when we have reasonable cause to believe child abuse/neglect exists. We believe parents love their children and try their best within their means to properly care for them. Often schools and parents working together can find solutions that might otherwise not be apparent. At other times outside intervention is necessary to break through old patterns. As difficult as contacting Child Protective Services and/or law enforcement may sometimes be, it is often the first step toward repairing a family's difficulties.
The feel good walking program is run by our recess staff for eight weeks in the spring. The students walk once a week during their lunch recess. The goal is to walk at least ten miles during the program. We invite positive role models such as Parents, Medical Professionals, Law Enforcement Officers, and High School Athletes from our community to walk with our students. At the end of the program there are certificates and prizes for the participants.
