Online Database Services
BHS library subscribes to several online databases of information. These databases contain thousands of magazine and newspaper articles that are not available using search engines like google. Three databases you will use are eLibrary, Grolier Online Encyclopedias, ProQuest Direct.

Why use paid-for databases instead of free online access? First, the information is updated frequently, in some cases on a daily basis. Second, the articles are reviewed and selected by editors, rather than chosen by a random computer search program. Finally, the information is produced by reputable, verifiable sources well known for their accuracy and credibility.

Since the information in these databases is of high quality and is useful for a variety of research projects, they are placed at the top of the high school library home page.

eLibrary contains millions of 100% full-text documents in many media types. Offerings include television and radio transcripts from more than 130+ programs, audio and video clips (17,000+), thousands of full-color photographs and pictures from more than a dozen collections, and full-color maps (5,300+) from 12 collections.

Grolier Online Encyclopedias provides access to over 80,000 articles from either The Encyclopedia Americana or Grolier’s Multimedia Encyclopedia. There are 155,000 continually updated links to Web sites, over 7,500 photographs and illustrations, and videos, animations, dynamic maps and sound.

The ProQuest® online information service provides access to current periodicals and newspapers, many updated daily and containing full-text articles from 1986. Users get easy Web access to more than 4,000 newspapers and periodicals, over a million dissertations, and a wide range of other content.
