Contest Information

ConocoPhillips and Blaine School District will be hosting the Washington State Math Championship in Blaine on Saturday, April 28, 2012.  The contest is open to teams in grades 5-8.  You may register as many teams as you wish. Registrations will be accepted on a first come - first serve basis.

RULES:

•The Math Championship is open to public and private schools.  A team consists of four students from the same grade, from the same school.  Homeschool students may participate with the school district they would otherwise be attending.  If necessary, a student from a lower grade may be moved up (i.e. a 5th grader may be on a 6th grade team), but no older students may compete on a younger team.

•Each team will take all five team-type tests for their grade level, submitting one answer sheet.  A sixth test will be an individual test consisting of 30 problems.  The first 10 questions of the individual test will be used toward the team test results.  The top 3 scores will be counted.  Students will compete against students in their own grade level.

•The Mental Math test is given orally.  It is taken without the aid of paper, pencil, or any type of outside assistance.  Each team member answers 5 questions.  If there are only 3 on a team, one member will be allowed to take the extra set.  If there are only 2 members, there is a penalty in that 1 set of 5 questions will be left unanswered.  No calculators may be used on Mental Math.

•Students may bring Foreign Language Dictionaries to use as needed to understand the language, not to do the math.

•Calculators (except TI-92, or those with QWERTY keyboards) will be allowed on all tests except Mental Math.  No PDA’s (Personal Digital Assistants) or cell phones with math capabilities will be allowed.

Answers will be bubbled in on a Scantron form.   Example bubble sheets are posted on the website to familiarize students with the answer forms.

•There will be no alternates, substitutes, or extras on a team during the test day.
