Message from BHS

This message was sent out via email to BHS families over the weekend. If you did not receive it, please log into Skyward, select My Account, and make sure your email address is correct. As we move forward with distance learning, email will be a critical form of communication for staff, students and families.

April 11, 2020

Students and Families:

Just checking in to provide some details as the Blaine School District moves forward with continuous learning opportunities that could be online or paper based to meet the needs of students.

Students - be sure to log into each of your teacher's Google classrooms USING YOUR SCHOOL EMAIL *firstname.lastname@stu.blainesd.org

School Assignments per content area will be rolling out starting Monday April 13th. See the chart below to know when you should expect a new assignment from your specific teacher in their Google classroom.  Students will have 1 week to work on the particular assignment. So when you get your Math assignment on Monday, it will be due the following Monday. When you get your Science assignment on Wednesday, it will be due the following Wednesday etc.  Each assignment has been designed to be no longer than about 2 hours of work per week. We encourage students to stay on track and do assignments in a timely manner and not wait until the night before it’s due to complete. The staff and administration realize that this is a new way of learning for most students. We encourage students to stay in touch with their teachers via Google Classroom or by email as much as needed.

Teachers will monitor student contact and virtual attendance will be taken once a week. Expect a call if a teacher was unable to reach a student via Google classroom or email.

We will be sending expectations of appropriate online behaviors to students and parents in an Email to follow.

Seniors:

Rest assured that we are working with the State Department of Education (OSPI) to ensure that if you were on track to graduate, and complete your weekly assignments in Google classroom going forward, that you WILL graduate in June. So stay up to date with your assignments and work with your teachers via email or Google classroom if questions or needs arise.

Several families have asked me about Graduation ceremonies. We are waiting for Governor Inslee to announce further guidelines if the current May 4th restrictions are lifted or modified. We will update you with information and plans as soon as possible. The current Graduation date of June 8, 2020 will be modified. OSPI has removed the five-day senior waiver due to COVID 19 closures. All students in the State of Washington are expected to attend virtually until June 19, 2020 as of the date of this email.

Dr. Granger and I will be available for a Senior student and parent question and answer session via Zoom on Thursday April 16 from 6:00-6:30. We certainly don’t have all the answers yet but will do our best to help answer questions that we can. Look for a Zoom invite from Dr. Granger early next week.

I would like to thank students and families for their patience throughout this process. Know that your teachers have worked hard for the past three weeks to give you the best virtual education possible via Google classroom. We will work hard to communicate with students and will dedicate ourselves to responding to students needs as quickly as possible via email or Google classroom.

Stay well and, as always, GO BORDERITES!
