Superintendent's Message August 12, 2020

Dear students, staff, families and community,

I am writing to you in the middle of the week, because in times like these, when things are changing so rapidly, sometimes a weekly communication is not enough. We continue to receive feedback from families that a fully remote learning model will require flexibility in order to be possible for many.

I mentioned in our recent community Q & A sessions, as well as in my weekly message, that the district is waiting on guidance from the state regarding attendance, and that our ability to be flexible regarding sign-in times for students hinges on that guidance. As of 6:00 P.M. tonight we have yet to receive written guidance on this matter.

The frustration of our families continues to grow, and we can no longer wait. We are working on an alternate plan for online learning that would include more flexible ways for your students’ attendance to be accounted for. We do know attendance will be required daily, but in the absence of clear guidance beyond required daily, we are proceeding with a local plan that we believe will better meet the needs of our students and families. Although we understand there is a chance that state guidance could force a change to our plan, we must make decisions so our families can make informed decisions regarding the education of their students. We are hopeful that families will give us the opportunity to be their choice for educating your children.

We are in this with you, and we hear you. We care about our students, our staff, and our families, and we are working hard every day to provide a plan that will take care of each of you. Please, hang in there with us, for together we will withstand the tide. It is a great night to be a Borderite, and as always, a great night to be your superintendent.

With sincere appreciation,

Dr. Christopher Granger, Superintendent
