Blood Drive, Give the Gift of Life

On Wednesday, December 5, your high school blood drive registered a total of 42 donors! We welcomed 24 first-time-donors to the Bloodworks Northwest family – new donors, we hope it was a positive experience for you and that you will consider becoming a life-long blood donor! We were able to collect 32 units of whole blood. Since each unit of whole blood is separated into the different components (red cells, platelets, and plasma,) your efforts will benefit as many as 96 patients throughout the Pacific Northwest. The blood donations collected at the blood drive are critical to maintain a stable blood supply for surgeries, medical emergencies, and for supporting patients battling life-threatening illnesses like leukemia and other cancers.

Thanks to all the donors who took time out of their busy day to donate blood! With great appreciation to Blaine High School for blood drive sponsorship, Leadership students, Ashley D., Shubh W., Katie M., Alex O., Payton I., and Evan for leading the blood drive committee, Dave Fakkema for overseeing the drive, and everyone else who supported this event. You all play such an integral role in our mission to save lives – we wouldn’t be able to do it without you!

On behalf of patients in our community’s hospitals, I wish to extend our thanks to you. These are a few patients who recently received blood products from Bloodworks Northwest:

  • Patient with throat bleeding. Patient used: 10 units of red blood cells, 8 units of plasma, 1 unit of platelets.
  • Patient with post-operative bleeding. Patient used: 10 units of red blood cells, 6 units of plasma, 1 unit of platelets.
  • Patient with gastric cancer. Patient used: 13 units of red blood cells, 1 unit of platelets.
  • Patient with urosepsis. Patient used: 12 units of red blood cells, 6 units of plasma, 2 units of platelets.

Each day, 800 people must donate blood to meet the needs of patients in hospitals. Your blood drive played an important role in helping meet that goal.

We will be back at Blaine High School in March! We hope to see you there.
