School will begin two hours late tomorrow, 1/14/20, due to icy road conditions throughout the county. Buses will run 2 hours late, and morning preschool will be cancelled. Should a change in conditions require a change to this plan, an update will be sent at 8:30.
Correction: Buses will not be on snow routes. Specific routes with changes have been notified by phone.
The buses for route 12 and 13 are currently stuck at the Bell Rd. and Peace Portal Dr. intersection. Families should expect these buses to be running late.

Early this morning, the Blaine Police Department notified Blaine School District Administration of a post to Snapchat, by a Middle Student, that depicts an abstract character holding a weapon with the caption "Enough is Enough" The Blaine Police Department has met with the family of the student and at this time does not consider the post to represent a credible threat against a specific individual, or the school in general. That being said, this student will not be permitted to return to school until an extended investigation into this matter can be conducted. At this time there is not a projected timeframe for the student to be allowed to return to school. The safety of students and staff remains our highest priority.

Just after 3pm a staff member inadvertently entered the campus lockdown code into an office desk phone which activated an announcement campuswide. Students and staff who were still within buildings were moved into a safe location, and those exiting campus continued their exit. It took approximately 5 minutes to clarify that it was a false alarm and the lockdown was lifted.

With the extended number of days lost to inclement weather during the month of February, five (5) to date in our case, Whatcom County districts are starting the process of projecting calendar implications. Our 2018-19 calendar calls for the first three days lost to be made up on June 14-17-18, and that is what we anticipate at this time. As the additional two days are eligible for waiver application to OSPI, we are in the process of considering recommendation of said application to the Board. Once approved by OSPI, and provided that there are no additional days lost, we can move forward with formal designation of June 18 as the final day of the current school year.

Blaine School District is cancelling school on Thursday, February 14. Our maintenance and grounds staff have done an incredible job of removing 12-14 inches of snow off of campus parking lots and sidewalks over the past three days. We also greatly appreciate the efforts of both the City of Blaine and Whatcom County road clearing crews. However, there remains too much compact snow and ice across many areas of the District to be able to run our busses safely, especially on secondary roads. Once school resumes next week, we will start the process of determining the impact of this extended storm on the school calendar. Please stay safe, and we look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday.

The School Board will hold a Special Meeting on Wednesday, February 13, at 5pm in the District Office boardroom. The purpose of the meeting will be for the Board to review final cost estimates of the Grandstand project and to take action on approval of the bleacher and press box purchase from a KCDA vendor. Prior to the Regular Board Meeting on Monday, January 28, 2019, the School Board will hold a Special Meeting, moving into executive session, commencing at 5:30 p.m. The purpose of this meeting is to review the performance of a public employee. The executive session activity will be facilitated by Dr. Larry Francois, Superintendent of the NWESD. The meeting is anticipated to last for no more than one hour. No action is scheduled to be taken on this matter. The executive session is not open to the public.

At 9:35 campus locked down after student reported that unknown individual offered a ride which student refused. Car matching vehicle's description was identified in parking lot. Police located driver who is a parent. Determined no threat to campus and lockdown lifted at 9:40.
Parents and Families, We are in the process of transitioning to a new automated calling system for absences. It appears that the attendance calling feature may have malfunctioned today and phoned families whose children were present in school. We apologize for causing any alarm if you received a call telling you that your child was marked absent when they may not have been. We will work diligently to troubleshoot the issue before resuming the service. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this transition.
The Blaine School Board will hold a Special Meeting on August 31 at 4:30pm to consider ratification of the BEA collective bargaining agreement, as well as other staff compensation schedules, etc. The agenda will be available on BoardDocs by the end of business on August 28.
