When I was young and in the third grade my teacher, Mrs. Haugland handed me a piece of paper one day in May. She said that I should think about going to summer school when regular school got out.
Now, summer school --at least at that time -- meant either one of two things: It meant that
a.) you weren’t doing so hot in school, and you should plan to give up your long-awaited, sleep-in lazy mornings and play-all-day precious vacation to get some help, or
b.) it was a fun enrichment activity class doing something that you really liked or were good at.
Mrs. Haugland must have seen the deer-in-the-headlights panic in my eyes and immediately assured me that I wasn’t in trouble or about to flunk third grade. No, in fact, she told me that she noticed that I had a talent as a writer and that the paper was, in fact, a personal invitation for me to join a creative writing class for elementary school students across the district.
The gears in my head started turning, and I think I felt a little like another Buc, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. You know that one scene from the annual Christmas special on television. When he’s just been told he’s cute by the doe, Clarise and gets the turbo boost of adrenaline to shoot him “Whoo-whoo!”ing into the sky.
That’s the moment I knew I was a writer. My teacher told me. She saw it. She told me. And I didn’t know up until that point.
Thanks, Mrs. Haugland! Thank you for noticing. Thank you for believing in me. What a valuable gift. I’ll make sure to pass it on.
