Dr. Granger's Community Message April 30, 2021

Good evening students, staff, families and community,

As we approach the beginning of May this next week, we are wrapping up this year and preparing for the return of all students to in-person learning full-time and working the logistics of the Department of Health Guidelines. We are so excited to be gearing up for all students to be in the building every day for full days in the 2021-2022 school year.

2021-2022 Planning: Learning Model Choice
We acknowledge that there may be some families who are still interested in an online option. While there was a lot of flexibility this year around rules of online learning, there are many unknowns at this time from the state regarding next year’s rules for remote instruction. Preliminary indications are that online options for Basic Education will not be as flexible as this year and will require full days and full weeks of learning (8:20 - 2:50 M-F). In order to make informed decisions, we are asking families to complete an attestation to indicate their learning model choice for the 2021-2022 school year. This survey attestation will be open starting tonight through May 14. As our goal is to have all of our students in class, all day, five days a week in the 2021-2022 school year, all students will be assigned to in-person learning as the default response. Once we get final numbers of online interest, we will take next steps to determine what options we may be able to offer, and we will communicate those options with families who have indicated an interest in online learning for next year.

Preparing Your School-Issued Chromebook and Accessories for Return
All Chromebooks issued to students for the 2020-2021 school year must be returned prior to summer break. At the beginning of June, all hybrid students will be required to leave their school-issued Chromebooks at school at the end of each day. Chromebooks will be collected by the BSD Tech Department and all returns reconciled prior to June 17th.

Please follow these instructions for cleaning and preparing your Chromebook for return:

  • Use a soft cloth and non-abrasive cleaner to clean the Chromebook. Spray a cleaner on the rag (we recommend a product like Windex), DO NOT SPRAY CLEANER DIRECTLY ONTO THE DEVICE. Using the rag sprayed with the cleaning product, gently wipe the screen, keyboard and outer surfaces of the device.

  • Be sure to check USB ports for any of your own wireless components. Due to the overwhelming number of devices coming in at one time, the Tech Department cannot guarantee the return of personal components left in the device.

  • Remember to include the charger cord with your return. Please wrap and secure your cord. Students whose power cords are not returned will be charged a replacement fee of $30 plus tax.

  • When your Chromebook has been received by the Tech Department, damages (if any) will be assessed and fees will be charged for anything outside of normal wear and tear.

  • Make sure your name is on your device. If the original sticker is present, that will suffice. If the original sticker with the student’s name is no longer on the Chromebook, use a piece of masking tape and write the student’s name (first and last), along with the student’s grade and affix it to the front of the Chromebook. This will help us to quickly reconcile all returns and save families from receiving unnecessary invoices.

  • Cleaning your Chromebook bag:

    • Please be sure to check and clear all pockets and compartments.

    • Using a damp cloth, spot clean any dirt and messes from the bag.

Preparing To Return Your School-Issued Hotspots
All hotspots issued to families for the 2020-2021 school year must be returned by June 15.  Beginning on June 10, we will begin a drop-off schedule for all families who received school-issued hotspots. More information regarding the drop-off location and times will be provided at a later date.

Please follow these instructions for cleaning and preparing your hotspot(s) for return:

  • Use a soft cloth and non-abrasive cleaner to clean the hotspot(s). Spray a cleaner on the rag (we recommend a product like Windex), DO NOT SPRAY CLEANER DIRECTLY ONTO THE DEVICE. Using the rag sprayed with the cleaning product gently wipe the screen and outer surfaces  of the device.

  • Be sure to return the box and charging cord along with your hotspot(s). If you do not have the box, please place the device and charging cord in a ziploc bag with your name on it. This will help us quickly verify and track returns.

  • When your hotspot(s) are received by the Tech Department, damages (if any) will be assessed and fees will be charged for anything outside of normal wear and tear.
